Gingivitis is the inflammation of the gums as a result of inadequate cleaning of dental plaque. If this persists the inadequate removal of bacteria/dental plaque can cause decay as well as further gum problems. If the disease persists it forms a more deep rooted issue to the supporting structures of the tooth, which we call the peridontium. This can lead to the loss of teeth through the depletion of the supportive structures around the tooth, such as the bone.
